Burgers, Fries & Shakes

Long gone are the days that fast food burger restaurants can satisfy burger cravings. If you're a carnivore there is nothing like sinking your teeth in big juicy hamburger. Burger have evolved over the years. They are no longer a simple beef patty with lettuce, tomato and cheese. Burgers have taken on a new form and some are even considered gourmet. Today burgers are served with meat or without and topped with things that will make our grandparents cringe. There are many popular places in Detroit  serving up these delicious calorie filled sandwiches.

Located in Corktown on the corner of Michigan Avenue and 14th Mercury Burger Bar serves had pressed burgers, shakes and spirits. On the menu you will find burgers, hot dogs, salads and bologna sandwiches. From the classic hamburger to meatless and everything in between the menu offers a variety of choices.  The Blue Apple has blue cheese and applewood bacon. They are also famous for their delicious milkshakes, that can be order in the traditional flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. They also make a Boston Cooler, that's made with vanilla ice cream and Vernors.

MEXICO IN DETROIT

There's a little section in Southwest Detroit, called Mexicantown and there you will find, some of the best authentic restaurants in town. One of the most popular Mexican restaurants Xochimilco, is located in the heart of Mexicantown, and seems to be the go-to-restaurant, when you have that craving for Mexican food. The two story restaurant is always busy serving up delicious Mexican dishes, where the crowd keeps coming, well after midnight.  Don't even think about getting in here on Cinco de Mayo, unless you've made reservations, because you will find the line, stretched for blocks. The restaurant is so well known, that it does not have a website or uses social media.

If you like Margaritas and Fajitas visit Armando's  Restaurant and Catering. This authentic restaurant is famous for having the best torta's in town. A torta is a Mexican sandwich prepared on a roll with your choice of beef, chicken or fish, topped with lettuce, tomato and avocado. The portions are hearty and enough to share.

Southwest Detroit has some of the best Food trucks serving up delicious foods. I remember fist experiencing one of these trucks about six years ago, and I've been hooked ever since. The ingredients are fresh and the food is budget friendly.

El Primo taco truck, located on Dix St. and Central Ave. offers a variety of taco including chicken, beef, and pork tacos for $1.25 to $1.50 each. And some of these trucks even offer ceviche and shrimp cocktails and elote. El Taquito famous for its shrimp quesadillas, can be found at 6060 West Vernor Hwy. Seven days a week. There are plenty of topping for your tacos including jalapeno peppers and radishes, for those who like a little spice.

DETROIT PIZZERIAS

From deep-dish and thin crust and everything in between, Detroit has some of the best Pizzerias and  named, the third best pizza city, by GQ magazine in 1996, behind New York and Chicago.
Known for its signature square pizza Buddy's Pizza a Detroit staple has been around since 1936, opening its first location in Detroit, at the corner of Conant and 6 mile Rd. It wasn't until a decade later, in 1946 that Buddy's introduced the square pizza, which is know as the Detroit-style.  Buddy's Pizza is known as one of the top 25 pizza places in the country.

The original location is still open, and there are ten other locations throughout the metropolitan area. These classic pizzas have thick crust with generous amounts of cheese with pepperoni between the cheese and crust. Everyone usually reaches for the corner pieces, that are crisp and slightly burnt. You can request your pepperoni on top, or forgo it all together. The Super is the most popular with pepperoni, mushrooms, green pepper, onions, ham and cheese.

Pizza Papalis first opened in 1986 in Detroit, I can remember everyone being excited about the Chicago style deep-dish pizzas, especially the seafood combo pizza, stuffed with shrimp and crab.  These gourmet pizzas can be ordered in deep dish, thin crust, Detroit-style, and Chicago-style. Other items on the menu includes Stromboli's, calzones, pastas and salads. For those who have a sweet tooth, try the Papapillas, which are bite size dough balls fried to a golden-brown crisp, tossed in brown sugar and topped with caramel sauce. The most popular dessert on the menu is the deep dish chocolate chip cookie. There are six other Pizza Papalis located throughout the metropolitan area and one in Toledo, OH.

Niki's Pizzeria another Detroit favorite, also located in Greektown, and voted as one of the countries top 25 pizzerias has been around since the 80's. Known for its pizza that comes in four and eight corners. At Niki's, you can order pizza by the slice or select one of their many authentic Greek dishes offered on the menu like saganaki and Opa. The Greek salads are delicious and you can purchase their famous Greek dressing from the restaurant, or at local grocery stores. My favorite is the Mediterranean Pizza made with grilled chicken, spinach, roasted tomatoes, and feta cheese.  Niki's is open seven days a week until 2 a.m. except on the weekends, when the restaurant is open until 4 a.m.
